The Tinting Process: How It Works

Once your prescription lenses have been cut to fit your frames and treated with a protective hard coat, they move to our tinting station.

We mix specialized dyes—either powder or liquid—into near-boiling water. Your lenses are carefully dipped into this heated solution and left to soak. The protective hard coat and the lens material itself absorb the dye. By strictly controlling the temperature of the bath and the exact amount of time the lens soaks, we can control how dark the tint is and exactly how much light it lets through.

Simple Tints vs. Complex Medical Filters

Not all tints are created equal. The process changes depending on what your brain and eyes need:

  • Simple Tints (like basic blues or yellows): These are usually created with a single dye.
  • Complex Tints: These require carefully balanced mixtures. We often have to layer multiple dyes—such as yellows, greens, and others—to achieve the precise color vibrancy and light-blocking properties your doctor prescribed.

How We Ensure Perfect Accuracy

When you are relying on a lens to prevent a migraine or stop a seizure trigger, "close enough" isn't good enough. Throughout the entire process, we use specialized light transmission devices to measure the lens's performance.

  • The Spectrograph Curve: Every medical tint has a specific "spectrograph curve"—a visual map of exactly which wavelengths of light are being blocked and which are allowed through.
  • Our Master Tint Library: To ensure your lenses are exactly right, we maintain a library of hundreds of controlled, fade-proof tint samples. We compare your lenses against these precise standard samples to guarantee a perfect match.
  • Testing in the Real World: We don't just test your glasses under lab equipment. Before they leave our facility, every pair of tinted lenses is double-checked under the lighting conditions you actually live in—including bright outdoor sunlight and harsh indoor fluorescent lighting. This ensures your lenses will look natural and perform consistently, no matter where your day takes you.
